Thursday, March 21, was the CBL forum. In this event, our entire grade presented their solutions and inventions they had created throughout this entire unit. Overall, we really enjoyed the community forum because we heard feedback from other people and parents. In fact, we even got three offers from parents to buy our curtains! At our booth we had our curtains, our poster, our website, and a commercial we made telling the audience what our solution was and showing the video of us implementing the curtains. We prepared by making a speech and saying what we were going to say at the forum to our classmates. From this experience, we learned lots about public speaking, and being able to answer any question the audience had on the spot. Written by: Natalia Fishkin
Over the past week, our group has been collecting data by sending out a serve to the 7th grade class. We found that most people in our grade has not had a bird fly into their window. But for the people who has had a bird fly into their window, we found that the most common place for this is the Pacific Palisades. In our survey, the most common number of birds to fly into someone’s house is 2-3. A lot of people know that birds fly into their windows and are getting hurt but yet they do nothing about it. That is why we created our bird curtains. According to our survey, 32.2% of the students who filled out the survey would be willing to take home and test our product. We might take them up on their offer and continue to collect data. Over all, I think our curtains are pretty good. The only thing I would change about them is that we would have the curtains come with a bar that you can attach to the wall to hang them up. After CBL is over, we will probably keep using these curtains, collect more data, and make our community a safer community for birds. Written by: Sydney Ginestro
Our first design for our solution is a clear curtain with a holographic square in the middle. Our second design is a clear curtain with 4 red strips of holographic bird tape. Our curtains are to prevent birds from flying into windows. We found that many birds get killed from this daily, and it can also delay the birds that survive migration paths. Our solution was originally going to have the curtains be fully covered in holographic coloring, but when we did more research, we found that the entire curtain doesn’t need to be filled, only one area does. This is because the holographic coloring looks like flames to birds, and if they see a little bit of flames, they still wouldn’t go towards the window opposed to the window being fully covered with holographic. We have come across many difficulties throughout our solution. One being how we cannot find a way to implement our curtains because we cannot predict when this will happen to someone’s house. Our group has been asking many people if this has happened to them and if so how many times, and a few people have said that this has happened more than once, and we will probably implement this solution with their help. This week we built our curtains, and will hopefully find a place to test them. Written By: Francesca Coppola
So far, our group has made excellent process. I think that we have come up with a good solution that is manageable to bring to life for this project. We’re smooth sailing and haven’t run into any problems yet because everyone in our group gets along well and we all contribute great ideas to strengthen our overall project. We are working on ordering materials that we will use to construct our product that we will present. Overall, we are in a good place and I am excited to see how the rest of this project unfolds. Our day with the faculty went really well. Our team was deciding between two different solutions to our problem and collaborating with the faculty helped us make a decision. Our first solution was to make an app that tracks the migration paths of birds, and if they were to come near cities, we would put up something that would scare the birds away. One of the teachers described to us that this idea wouldn’t really work because we cannot keep birds away from cities since it is one of their habitats. All of the teachers seemed to be in favor of our second solution which is red holographic curtains because it seems like something we can test and it doesn’t keep birds away from their habitats. Our solution looks much better since we applied the feedback to it. One community that we are working with is the Los Angeles Audubon community. I emailed this company and they sent us a link that tells us more about the way birds see colors. Our solution will have a positive impact on our community because birds will not keep on injuring themselves or dying from running into windows. This will also prevent people’s windows from being harmed or damaged. Written by: Natalia Fishkin This week, we narrowed our topic to birds flying into windows on buildings/houses. We landed on this topic because we were discussing possible solution for anything involving bird migration. Then we would talk about what problem that would solve. Each time we did this, we got closer and closer to our final topic until finally we landed on birds flying into windows. When we were researching about this topic, we found out that birds can see the color red and they are frightened by shiny tape. We got to thinking and decided that we were going to make red shiny tape. Before we finalized our decision, I looked it up to make sure that it doesn’t already exist but I found that it did. Maybe we will improve this idea and make it better. https://www.amazon.com/Reflective-Bird-Repellent-Scare-Tape/dp/B00Y00AFX8Written by: Francesca Coppola
Our names are Sydney, Natalia, and Francesca and we are in 7th grade at Windward School in Los Angeles, California. We have just begun the CBL (Challenge Based Learning) Project for our class and the topic that we are studying is Bird Migration. We were lucky enough to have a guest speaker, Tom Haglund, talk to our class about migration. When he came in to talk to us about this, the three of us were all very interested in learning more about animal migration. When we found out we were in a group together, we took a vote on what topic we wanted to do, and we all voted to research migration. As we looked more into migration, we came to a consensus to learn and research more about bird migration, which is going to be the topic we base our project off of. Our narrowed subtopic is to help migrating birds avoid flying into buildings. This causes thousands of birds deaths every year. We came to this agreement by discussing possible solutions for different problems with bird migration, and all of us seemed the most enthusiastic about this problem. This subtopic interests us because we want to help more birds survive the migrating process and help make someone else’s wrong of unneeded developments. |
